Did you know that the famed "Purple Heart" award began under George Washington and then was abandoned until 1932? What did America use to reward those soldiers and patriots who showed exceptional bravery and valor in between? That's the focus of the NRA National Firearms Museum's latest exhibit, "By Resolution of Congress."
If you live or are traveling near the Fairfax, Virginia area, you and your family are welcome to come visit the Museum, which is open 364 days a year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at our NRA Headquarters, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, 22030. Admission is free and membership is not required! We have thousands of historic firearms, complete with video touchscreen displays and Museum curators on hand to help you understand the beauty and craftsmanship of the firearms and memorabilia on display.
But if you can't come see us in person, we have a great video for you! Hosted by NRA Media Editorial Director Mark Keefe and NRA Firearms Museum Director Phil Schreier, this video demonstrates the amazing history of valor in our American troops.
"You come through the National Firearms Museum, and you see this case, and it's dominated by a Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington," Keefe said. "When you look at this painting, you see the father of our country, the father of, frankly, modern human freedom. And that painting is looking down over swords and guns and medals that represent the greatest of bravery and sacrifice that Americans have exhibited in combat."
