CCW Minute: Choosing & Using Pepper Spray

Pepper spray is a great addition to your everyday carry rig ... but how do you incorporate it?

Pepper spray can be a great addition to your everyday carry (EDC) rig, but it's important to choose the right kind and to understand how it works. The first thing to know is that not all "pepper sprays" are created equal. Some are designed specifically for law enforcement, some created specifically for hunters (often called "bear spray"), while others were created for regular civilians.

They all use the same active ingredient--oleoresin capsaicin, otherwise known as "OC." This is derived from pepper plants, and when delivered in a concentrated spray, it's a pretty effective deterrent to humans and dogs alike, even though it's not considered lethal.

The deterrent value is twofold: First, a solid shot of pepper spray to the eyes, nose and mouth is immensely painful (even though it does no lasting damage). Second, when placed properly in the target's face, OC spray causes involuntary eye closing, as well as immediate and copious tears that make it extremely difficult to see.

It's important to remember that, even though pepper spray is considered a less-lethal defensive solution, it's still very serious business to use it against someone. It should be reserved for times when you're facing an immediate, credible and potentially grievous attack. It's also important to know that, although OC spray tends to be quite effective on the majority of people, a small percentage of (extremely intoxicated or deeply emotionally disturbed) people are capable of shrugging off a blast of pepper spray.
