Don't Bag a Buck With Your Buick: 8 Tips to Avoid Deer/Car Collisions

Statistically speaking, deer are the deadliest animal in America by a long shot. Here's how to avoid becoming a statistic.

Did you know that the world's deadliest animal is the mosquito, and that America's deadliest animal is the deer? It's true! Of course, in neither case is the animal directly preying on humans. A mosquito only takes a few drops of blood with its bite, but it can leave behind all kinds of vicious diseases--especially malaria. And while American deer are easily spooked herbivores, they kill Americans all the time. How? Car accidents. Learning how to avoid colliding with deer is an late-season survival skill right up there with learning how to drive on snow.

In this great video from our friends at the National Deer Association, you'll learn all about how to defeat America's deadliest critter at his (and her) own game. There are specific patterns to the landscape that will alert you to your local "danger zones" for deer crossings. Your local department of transportation is probably doing their best with signage, but there are other things to look out for.

You'll also learn what works to get deer of the road, as well as what most emphatically doesn't. You'll learn when you need to be on "high alert," and also when that "high alert" needs to stay elevated despite things looking safe. Created by experts in deer biology, this video is a must-watch for everyone with a driver's license, whether they're interested in hunting or not!
