The "Professional" part of the name of this new-for-2025 line of Mossberg shotguns doesn't mean that you have to be a pro to own it ... just that if you were, you'd be more than satisfied with the fit, finish and reliability of the 590M Professional Series. As far as Mossberg is concerned, "Professional" just denotes a gun that the company puts through an enhanced assembly and quality control process, has special finishes and features, and is optimized for performance. That said, the 590M Professional is exciting for many, many reasons.
To start, the Mossberg 590M feeds from a magazine, not a tube, but it is a pump-acton shotgun. It's fed from the first-ever double-stacked magazine made for pump actions. This design uses integral stabilizing ribs on the magazine, which engage directly to notches engineered into the receiver for a positive lock-up.
A few more words about those double-stacked magazines are in order. First of all, the 590M comes with one 10-round magazine, with 5, 10, 15 and 20-round capacities for sale separately. The mags are constructed with hardened-steel feed lips, over-molded steel shell ramps and an anti-cant, rounded follower to ensure reliable feeding. Additional features include an easy-grip, molded external shell; proprietary self-lubricating polymer magazine body; heavy-duty ASTM-A-228 music-wire magazine spring for prolonged service life; removable floor plate for ease of cleaning; and durable black oxide finish on the steel components.
As for the firearm, an all-steel, ambidextrous magazine release button and housing are strategically positioned in front of the trigger guard and will not interfere with cycling of the action. Its metal exterior wears a Cerakote Tungsten finish--a polymer-ceramic coating that provides superior corrosion and abrasion resistance. There are four separate versions available: a compact with orange synthetic furniture, a compact with black furniture, and a full-sized line with the same color options.
The 590M Professional comes out of the box with metal rear Optimized Ghost Ring and front fiber optic sights equipped with protective low-profile wings. If you'd like to install an optic, its optic-ready receiver (RMSc footprint) can be acessed by simply removing the rear Ghost Ring sight.
Currently, the 590M Professional is only available in 2.75" 12-gauge, but aside from that it offers a great customization spectrum that shooters of all body sizes will appreciate. The two stock options offer stock spacer systems: For the full-size gun, a Magpul SGA variable length-of-pull (LOP) stock adjusts in .5” increments from 12.25" – 14.25". The compact stock features a 1" insert for adjustment from 12" – 13". A Magpul MOE forend offers an extended length with front and rear hand stops, and M-LOK slots for ease of adding accessories. The Compact models feature a traditional corncob-style forend.
The 590M sports an 18.5" heavy-walled, cylinder bore barrel. Like all 590 pump actions, the 590M has dual extractors, steel-to-steel lockup, improved top-mounted ambidextrous safety and twin action bars. MSRP $913-$1,074, depending upon model chosen. Mossberg.com.
