It may be a little early to discuss the end-of-year holidays, but it's never too soon to share our bounty. In just a couple of short weeks, on Friday, November 1, 2024, the NRA encourages our members to celebrate the start of the second annual “Wild Game Meat Donation Month.” If your NRA family can spare it, extra venison or other game meat will help provide meals for the hungry.

Food pantries are subject to the vagaries of supply, and they frequently don't offer fresh protein. That's a problem, especially for growing kids and the elderly. Wild-game meat is both tasty and healthful. In fact, venison is often the only "red" meat that cardiac patients are advised to eat. Unfortunately, in 2023 many of the Hunters for the Hungry network of processors did not receive enough donations to complete their missions. The NRA is taking the lead on changing that for 2024, and we need your help!

If you're a hunter, you're already well-positioned to make a difference. Recently completed hunter surveys show that if you are a member of a conservation organization you are three times more likely to donate to a Hunters for the Hungry organization. Many locales allow you to take more than one whitetail on your tag--please consider harvesting an extra animal for donation. You can find out more about how your state handles wild-game donation here!

“We hope that other organizations can help celebrate the hard-working network of Hunters for the Hungry/Hunters Sharing the Harvest organizations around America by helping spread the word and asking their members to donate legally harvested wild game meat,” said Peter Churchbourne, Managing Director of the NRA Hunting Division.

“New to this year’s celebration, we also request that all hunters share their wild game meat with a non-hunter. Make a point to cook a meal and tell your story to a non-hunter in the 24/25 season. Our research proved that non-hunters will support hunting activities when they know a hunter. We also learned that when non-hunters understand that we consume our wild game meat, they approve of hunting by an astounding 98%. To enhance the cultural acceptance of hunting, all hunters can do their part and share a meal and tell your story.”

The NRA is a long-time proud advocate and supporter of the Hunters for the Hungry/Hunters Sharing the Harvest network and welcomes all hunters to join us in spreading the word about this worthwhile program. Learn more about “Wild Game Meat Donation Month” at NWGMDM.nra.org.
