Outdoor Buddies: Helping Disabled Hunters

Able-bodied hunters never have to put much thought to getting out of the truck to open property gates or making the trek to the deer stand before first light. For disabled hunters, this is often the most difficult part of a hunting trip. Maneuvering wheelchairs over rough terrain or holding a rifle steady are just a few of the challenges disabled hunters face in order to enjoy the outdoors.

This is where Outdoor Buddies comes in to help.

Since 1984, this Colorado-based nonprofit has provided assistance to outdoorsmen who need extra help getting around hunting grounds. Whether they were born with a physical limitation, suffered an accident or sustained wounds in combat, Outdoor Buddies is there to step in as needed to ensure everyone gets their chance to harvest game and enjoy what nature has to offer. Able-bodied hunters can offer their time and energy to helping disabled hunters get out in the field, to inspire, rehabilitate and encourage them to continue the hunt, no matter how difficult.

Outdoor Buddies employs adaptive hunting gear that has thankfully become available on today’s outdoor market. All-terrain wheelchairs, for example, possess the engineering to maneuver around unforgiving landscapes with ease as well as mount a firearm for hunters to take the perfect shot. Many able-bodied hunters own electric vehicles like the QuietKat or ATVs and UTVs to help get them and their gear to stand quickly and undetected, but for disabled hunters, this is a necessity.

The essence of Outdoor Buddies lies within hunters who wish to share their passion for the outdoors with those who need a little help getting around. The outdoors are to be enjoyed and explored by everyone, so consider offering your time and energy to an organization that makes it possible for those with physical limitations to achieve a true outdoor experience.
