The Kimber Rapide lineup is a relatively recent addition to Kimber's storied tradition of crafting high-quality 1911 pistols, launched in response to growing demand for 1911s that not only perform exceptionally well on the range, but also stand out visually. The Rapide series quickly gained a reputation for its blend of cutting-edge design and precision engineering. Each model in the Rapide lineup embodies Kimber's commitment to innovation, with features like match-grade barrels, advanced coating, and distinctive stylistic elements that set them apart from traditional 1911s. The Rapide series has become synonymous with the idea that a firearm can be both a workhorse and a work of art, appealing to shooters who appreciate a fusion of form and function in their guns.

The Rapide Ice is tailored for those who demand the best from their firearms. With its unique design and advanced features, this pistol aims to not just meet but exceed the expectations of both enthusiasts and professionals. In this review, we'll take a closer look at its design, features and performance to determine if it upholds Kimber's esteemed reputation.

Available in .45 ACP and 9mm, this variant is the latest addition to the Rapide series of 1911s, continuing the tradition of reliability, performance and timeless aesthetics. While visually striking, the Rapide Ice is far from just a showpiece—it's built to endure rigorous use. Its slide and frame are made from high-quality stainless steel with a Diamond-Like Carbon coating, enhancing both durability and appeal. The 5" match-grade barrel, also stainless steel, is engineered for precision, ensuring consistent accuracy and long-lasting performance.

While the pistol is optic-ready, we opted to test it with its suppressor-height white-dot sights, anticipating the use of a suppressor on range day. The G-10 grips provided a secure hold, especially appreciated as temperatures climbed and our hands became sweaty in the summer heat. The skeletonized KimPro II trigger adds a touch of icy blue to the design and offers a light, crisp pull of between 4 and 5 lbs., contributing to the gun's overall accuracy. Weighing around 38 oz., the Kimber Rapide Ice proved to be well-balanced during firing, with controls that were easily operated without hesitation.

Range day was hot, with temperatures hitting the mid-80s before noon and not a breeze in sight. While 9mm is often the go-to caliber for concealed carry and general use, we decided to honor John Moses Browning’s original 1911 design by choosing the .45 ACP chambering for our shiny new Rapide. We tested it with Liberty Ammunition 105gr Overwatch, Doubletap's 160gr DT Lead-Free SC-HP Mann Load and Black Hills 230gr JHP, firing from 25 yards and measuring velocities with a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph.

The overall difference in spread in group size between all three offerings was a little less than an inch, with Doubletap bringing home the gold with an average group size of 1.5 inches. Black Hills and Liberty Ammunition weren't too far behind with average group sizes of 2.25" and 2.45", respectively. Considering these results were from testing conducted at 25 yards, any of the three would be a solid choice for defensive carry.

Adding to the shooting experience was the Banish 45 Suppressor from Silencer Central. Designed for handguns and pistol-caliber carbines, it accommodates everything from rimfire cartridges up to .45 ACP. Its titanium construction keeps it lightweight, with the 6.7" configuration weighing just 9.6oz. and the 8.6" version slightly heavier at 11oz. You can choose between eight or 12 baffles for optimal performance. The suppressor is user-serviceable for easy disassembly and maintenance, with keyed and indexed baffles for straightforward reassembly. Additionally, interchangeable pistons are available for purchase, allowing the suppressor to fit a wide range of pistols and carbines. The Banish 45 is a versatile, must-have addition to your collection, offering long-term savings and protection for your hearing.

After completing our tests, we were thoroughly impressed by the Rapide Ice’s combination of refined aesthetics and superior performance, making it a standout in the world of 1911s. Its robust construction, high-end features and elegant design contribute to an enjoyable shooting experience. The Banish 45 suppressor further enhances its versatility and shooting comfort, making it an essential companion for any range day. Whether you're a 1911 enthusiast, a .45 ACP fan or a Kimber collector, the Rapide Ice deserves your attention. MSRP $1,898; kimberamerica.com.
