Big news out of SHOT Show 2018: Savage Arms and Federal Premium have teamed up to produce an AR-15 and ammo combination that serves as a gateway from the world of AR-15 shooting to the world of long-range shooting. It's called the .224 Valkyrie, and if it doesn't have you cranking up the Wagner then...well, we just don't know how to help you. As Shooting Illustrated's Evan Brune learns in this video from Media Day at the Range, the Valkyrie is designed for those Americans who love modern sporting rifles, but who were a little disappointed to learn that the .223/5.56mm round isn't really ideal for long-range shooting. Up until now, folks have responded to that by going to the .308, which is also available on the AR-15 platform...but which features a challenging recoil and report that many journeyman shooters might find a bit intense. Now with the .224 Valkyrie, shooters can reach out to 1,000 yards (or more) with all the accuracy and comfort they could want.
