Shooting Sports USA Managing Editor Chip Lohman has collaborated on a book that takes a contentious debate-private gun ownership in America, and moves it into the classroom. Called "NRA...The Rest of the Story," some readers might find the book useful as a modern-day "Trojan Horse."
According to Lohman, the motivation for the project was to offset misquotes and negative press about the shooting sports, firearms and the NRA with a small, fact-filled resource that is short and to the point on topics often missed by the mainstream media. The illustrated book takes the reader on a virtual tour of the NRA including the Competitive Shooting Division, Education and Training Division, Law Enforcement's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program and the National Firearms Museum. Heavily documented are facts about the effect of Hollywood on the public's perception of firearms, the high level of safety attributed to the shooting sports, the most current numbers of gun owners versus crimes committed with a firearm, clarification of existing laws and misused terms, as well as a brief overview of NRA's contributions to land conservation, firearms safety, education and sports over the last 143 years.
As for the Trojan Horse: "We often turn to our friends for the best advice. The idea of this little $8 book is to use that to advantage, and to ask shooting sports enthusiasts to pass the book along for others to read, especially those who may be on the fence about firearms" said Lohman.
From Dr. Judy Tant, Clinical Psychiatrist and National Bullseye Pistol Champion: "From a multifaceted man (Marine, teacher, sailor and editor) comes this many-sided little book that sparkles with bits of information about the NRA's history and current mission. No polemics, just useful nuggets of data that the public would be unlikely to encounter otherwise. This book will not change the minds of dedicated anti-gunners, but it could make a difference in the hands of people who want to get the story right, but are too busy to do the research themselves."
Just released on August 20, the book is initially being offered through Amazon.com. Says Lohman: "For every book sold, I can give two away."
