Throwback Thursday: 150 Years of Colt's Single Action Army Pistol

This simple, reliable design is a blueprint for survival ... both the firearm's, and that of its wielder.

With not quite 250 years in existence, America is a young country. But 150 years is a very long time even by European standards, and it's really quite remarkable that in all that time, the Colt Single Action Army handgun has remained pretty much the same.

What gives the Colt SAA its longevity? Simplicity. Like sharks and alligators, this is a design that can be improved upon, but it doesn't need to be. It's a blueprint for survival, both for the firearm and its wielder. Easy to load, easy to shoot and easy to maintain, the Colt Single Action Army comes in a wide variety of calibers ... although purists still prefer the .45 LC, which is a serious-business round.

In this great episode of American Rifleman TV, you'll learn all about the long shadow this historical firearm has cast for 150 years (and why it's in no danger of disappearing). As American Rifleman's Evan Brune comments, "I think that's what's kind of amazing about the Colt Single Action Army is, here you have a gun that was introduced 150 years ago, and you can still go to the same company that made it 150 years ago and buy the same gun."
