The world of concealed carry tends to be about small, smaller and smallest--and that final category is often referred to as "micro-compact." Designed to disappear into a pocket-carry-type holster, micro-compacts are usually chambered in 9mm or smaller. Examples of Taurus' entries into the micro-compact market abound, including its 2021 release of the GX4. However, some shooters asked for a bit of a "more is more" approach, and Taurus has delivered: the GX4XL.
The "XL" does stand for "extra large," but make no mistake, this isn't a big or beefy pistol at all. Its frame size is the same as the original GX4, but with a slightly lengthened barrel for extra sight radius--which adds to accuracy, especially if you're not using a reflex sight. It has also been upsized just a bit for those with larger hands. The Taurus GX4XL accepts a flush-fit, 11-round magazine, as well as lengthened 13-round magazines as well.
American Rifleman's Chris Olsen took the new GX4XL down to the range for some trigger time. "The GX4 is a gun that's meant to be carried probably more than it's shot, but it's a lot of fun to shoot," said Olsen. "Its user-customizable frame allows for two backstraps ... I prefer the smaller one. I can get my hand really nice and high, thanks to the undercut on the trigger guard and the big recess at the back of the frame."
