Who knows the wild turkey better than the expert biologists at the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF)? Nobody we know, and so when we have questions about turkey hunting, we like to turn to Dr. Tom. As we and other NRA publications have noted, wild turkey populations, while still far higher than they were in the 1970s, have declined a bit in recent years.
Although most turkey hunting is done in the spring, and focuses solely on male birds, many states have a fall hunting season that allows for toms and hens to be taken. This tradition goes back to--you guessed it!--the first Thanksgiving, and the evidence of such is on every classroom wall and home refrigerator. How can conservationists balance the need to keep a healthy distribution of America's favorite game bird while still honoring our hunting traditions?
